Gameday Essentials at UGA

With October in full swing, football season is most certainly upon us. Here, at the University of Georgia, students, alumni and fans all eagerly await a Saturday in Athens. Although the Dawgs have not been playing too well, the team is in transition with a new head coach— Kirby Smart. Whether we walk out of Sanford Stadium with a triumphant win or a heartbreaking loss, looking stylish on Saturdays is of the utmost importance. Red and black dots the streets of Athens during any home game, portraying the fan’s loyalty and support. While just throwing on my red UGA jersey and a pair of cowboy boots is the easiest way to dress for gameday, collegiate women tend to dress up. Styling jewelry, handbags, shoes, sunglasses, face tattoos and red lipstick, any ensemble can be accented with plenty of red and black. Dressing for gameday has become such a big deal; therefore, most local Athens boutiques carry a “Gameday Collection,” which stock an abundance of red and black clothing. FringeCheeky PeachOn Cloud 9Red Dress Boutique and other local retailers have all contributed to the major interest in gameday clothing and accessories. What will you be wearing to ur next home game against Auburn University on November 12? GO DAWGS!

Athleisure: A Trend That’s Here To Stay

Athleisure refers to casual clothing — like yoga pants, sweat pants, and hoodies — that are designed to be worn both for exercising and for doing (almost) everything else, as defined by Merriam-Webster. Within the last few years, people have become increasingly more aware of their health and being active. Athleisure allows people to lead a healthier lifestyle, while still partaking in their daily activities. In the 1950s, a woman would put on her workout clothing to take a walk around the neighborhood, then shower and put on a dressier outfit before heading to the grocery store, out to lunch, etc. Presently, a woman can slip into her leggings, tank top and sneakers to hit the gym, shopping mall, a restaurant or anywhere that her day takes her! Athleisure, which many predicted to be a fleeting trend, has proven its permanence with its utter practicality and versatility.
The stylish athletic gear promotes healthy living and active lifestyles. For example, as a college student, I put on athleisure every morning on y way to class. Because I am comfortable in shorts and a tank top (especially in the Georgia heat) and my sneakers, I am more apt to walk from class to class rather than riding the bus. In addition, once I finish my classes for the day, I am already dressed for the gym. Therefore, I have no need to return to my dorm before going to exercise.

The success of athleisure can also be seen in the multitude of designers and celebrities who have produced trendy, athletic clothing lines. Retailers like Lululemon, Nike, Athleta and Adidas specialize in athleisure. More exclusive lines such as, Ivy Park (co-founded by Beyonce), Fabletics by Kate Hudson and CALIA by Carrie Underwood were created as a result of athleisure’s rising popularity. Because athleisure started roughly around 2012, it is drifting further away from an impermanent trend to a lasting lifestyle.

March Madness

Growing up with a basketball-fanatic for a mother has taught me to both love and hate the NCAA March Madness. I hate that the TV is constantly controlled by basketball games for over a week, but I love the friendly competition of our family bracket pool. Personally, I know little about the NCAA teams and who has the best odds of continuing on in the March Madness. When it comes time for me to fill out I bracket, I have two main strategies (1) choose the highest seed teams and have the #1 teams from each region meet at the Final Four or (2) choose the team with the cutest uniforms.

This year, I clearly chose the latter! Who wouldn’t want to choose a winning team based on their attention to school colors and uniform design?! As tonight, I am currently winning my family’s bracket pool!! I guess looking good on the court might make the players that much better!

After much consideration of color, style and versatility, I decided on Kentucky, UNC, UGA and Duke for the Final Four of basketball fashion. Kentucky and Duke both have rich royal blue uniforms, which truly stand out on the court. As a future Georgia bulldog, I had to show allegiance to the uniforms I will be seeing on campus for the next four years. I do love red and black together! But, of course, UNC Chapel Hill never seems to disappoint. Their carolina blue uniforms with the unique argyle design down the sides make them the clear winner.

Play Ball!

It’s that time of year again: baseball season! One of America’s iconic pastimes, baseball games are a national favorite. From delicious hotdogs with a side cracker jacks, to singing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” baseball games are quintessential to American culture. Not to mention, a cute, simple outfit and your favorite team’s baseball cap remains such a classic ensemble. I hope you get a chance to cheer on your team this summer. Go Nats!
