Written In The Stars

Astrology, itself, has certainly gained popularity in recent years, and because of this apparel, accessories and everything in between have acquired a zodiac motif. With Cosmopolitan’s weekly horoscopes in their Snapchat story to articles entitled Horoscope-Inspired Outfit Ideas for Every Zodiac Sign and The Spring 2017 Runway Trend You Should Try, Based on Your Zodiac Sign, astrology has truly penetrated the fashion industry.

My roommate and I wearing our Capricorn and Taurus chokers.

From astrological nail polish to keychains, phone cases and necklaces inscribed with each of the twelve zodiac signs,  fashion brands certainly have found a way to market this trend. Some consumers, like myself, purchase zodiac-related products because they are fascinated and proud of their sign.Others purchase the merchandise as an astrologically themed item can make a great gift, as it is personalized to the recipient, but not overdone.

As a proud Capricorn, I read my horoscope daily and constantly save facts and tidbits about the typical Capricorn on my Pinterest. Personally, I believe that majority of the stereotypical Capricorn traits truly are applicable to my life. Furthermore, my roommate also sees much truth in her sign, Taurus, and we actually have matching beaded chokers with our zodiac signs on a pendant.

From My Shelves: The Fashion Book

The Fashion Book…more like the Fashion Bible! Phaidon has managed to include over 200 years of fashion in a beautiful little book that fits in any woman’s handbag. From designers, models, and icons to photographers and even prestigious fashion colleges, The Fashion Book covers the key names in the fashion world in a mere 571 pages. Each entry includes an accompanying photograph of the individual or and illustration that pertains to the work or aesthetic of the individual. First published in 1998, The Fashion Book has seen many runways and photo-shoots since its original creation. Therefore, Phaidon created a new edition; just published in 2014. Although trends and styles have come and gone in the last seventeen year, Phaidon kept timeless icons and designers in addition to the new, fresh faces of the fashion world.

 I could spend hours in my pajamas, simply flipping through the pages of The Fashion Book. With the turn of each page comes increased knowledge of the men and women who have shaped the well-dressed world we live in today. Some of the most notable names include; Coco Chanel, Christian Dior, Jacqueline Kennedy, Alexander McQueen, Kate Moss, Twiggy, Valentino, and so many more! Not to mention, the beautiful cover of the little work of art. The bold pink, black and white design is absolutely stunning and makes the book seem so chic.

If you are anything like me, you absolutely love learning about the history of fashion in order to mold your sense of style. These pages have been the utmost inspiration for me since opening the book on Christmas (thank you David!). I would highly recommend adding The Fashion Book to your literature collection!

Perfection?

To be honest with you, I usually loathe studying and analyzing poetry. Recently I remembered one of my very few fond memories of poetry, and decided to give it another try. At the end of my sophomore year, my fabulous English teacher challenged us present and analyze a poem for a poetry explication. Because we were able to choose a poem from an assinged collection, I fell in love with Delight in Disorder. Following the poem, I’ve shared some of my thoughts from the beautiful and poignant piece.

Delight in Disorder

A sweet disorder in the dress
Kindles in clothes a wantonness;
A lawn about the shoulders thrown
Into a fine distraction;
An erring lace, which here and there
Enthrals the crimson stomacher;
A cuff neglectful, and thereby
Ribbons to flow confusedly;
A winning wave, deserving note,
In the tempestuous petticoat;
A careless shoe-string, in whose tie
I see a wild civility—
Do more bewitch me, than when art
Is too precise in every part.

-Robert Herrick

In Delight in Disorder, Robert Herrick dramatizes the internal conflict of the speaker who ponders the true meaning and source of beauty. Acting as a “fly on the wall” in a young woman’s dressing room, the speaker expresses his reactions to her beauty. The speaker, most likely a man, finds more appeal in her effortless disarray than in the extreme precision of the societal conception of beauty. Through his use of flawed rhyme scheme and oxymorons, Herrick imparts a wisdom about the concept of beauty. Delight in Disorder proves that imperfections are more alluring and powerful than the illusion of perfection, as perfection itself does not exist. Emphasizing the importance of natural and genuine observations instead of conceited and insincere opinions, Herrick conveys that a woman’s effect on senses is what defines her, rather than her more concrete characteristics and flaws. Herrick’s piece upholds the adage that “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” Despite the cliche, this gorgeous poem reveals that perfection is unachievable, and therefore; imperfections are the only truly beautiful things in life.

Herrick, a seventeenth century writer and poet, delivers an timeless message that many girls in today’s society (including myself) should heed. Constantly surrounded by stick thin models and condemantions of more plump individuals, most people today- especially young woman- feel a pressure to look and dress a certain way; to be perfect. As Herrick presents, “perfect” does not exist, but society never fails to conjure up a conception of perfect beauty. From clothing to body image, and everything in between, remember to be yourself and develop your own personal style, including those beautiful imperfections!

“Imperfection is beauty, madness is genus, and it’s better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring!” -Marilyn Monroe

Tick Tock: Time to Shop

Looking at my watch and counting down the minutes until I was free to leave work, I couldn’t believe only 5 minutes had passed since I last checked. Twenty minutes later, my watch still read 8:35pm and I knew that it had gone to its eternal resting place in watch heaven. Well, at least its battery! This incident gave me the perfect excuse to upgrade my old, slighted rusted, and now broken watch.

Walking into the Michael Kors Outlet store the next day, I knew exactly which watch I wanted (After several hours of online perusing, of course!). Gazing into the glass cabinet, I was ecstatic to find that they actually had the one I wanted! All I have to say is, Michael Kors has done it again because I’m absolutely in love with my new watch. Also, my beloved new arm candy was 25% off the regular price at any signature Michael Kors store.

The Michael Kors Chain Link Watch in Tortoise and Gold is the ultimate watch for any girl who can’t decide between wanting a large boyfriend watch and a more dainty choice. Because of the chain links, the watch doubles as a fabulous bracelet! In addition, the combination of tortoise and gold enables it to be worn with casual outfits as well as any dressy ensemble. The Michael Kors label—MK—also holds a very special place in my heart, given my name. Are you sure its not for Mary Kate, Michael?

If you’re due for a new watch or simply want to treat yourself, hop on over to your nearest Michael Kors Outlet store, and find some fantastic arm candy!

Raising the Hier

In honor of Mother’s Day, not only will I be celebrating my very own mother, but also new mother who is constantly in the spotlight. No other than Kate Middleton, or the more official title of the Duchess of Cambridge. This fabulous momma always looks stunning, as she cares for little George. It must be easy task raising a child who will one day rule the country; no big deal. To the contrary, being a mother is a lot of work, and Kate is constantly under public scrutiny, which adds immense pressure to her motherly duties.

Kate must always make sure that George shares with other children at playgroups, eats his vegetables, takes daily naps, behaves at royal events, and visit his grandmother (at Buckingham Palace, of course). I thoroughly enjoy picking up an issue of People, to peruse an article of Kate’s flawless fashion and adorable little George. I cannot wait to see the prince grow up!

Monday Morning Madness

Wake up, go to the gym, grab some coffee…the usual Monday morning routine. But this morning was different. This morning (at 8am sharp) marked the beginning if the Lilly Pulitzer Endless Summer Sale.

I was up (with ALL over Lilly lovers) by 8am, to stake my claim at yet another beloved Lilly sale! Ruthlessly adding item of after item to my tote, the Lilly server crashed!

I figured I better get out of my Lilly boxers and t-shirt, and do something productive with my day! Receiving this email while I was out, I figured it was time to rush home to do what I do best: online shop.

Overjoyed to be back in a happy place filled with Murfee scarves and cocktail dresses galore, I continued to add item after item to my tote. Once I was ready to checkout, half the items I had perviously wanted to purchase earlier this morning were sold out! It was quite a depressing moment, but I guess it was a sign that some pieces weren’t meant to live happily ever after in my color-coded closet!

Even though there wasn’t too much left, I decide to purchase a few things. Why not!? So I guess that items that will soon be apart of of my color-coded closet are. . . (drum role, puh-lease!)

In The Kitchen

Fresh peaches, a slice of juicy watermelon, fresh caught fish, grilled corn on the cob. If you’re moth wasn’t watering after my first sentence, then there’s something wrong with you! In my opinion, food is so much better in the summer. Everything is fresh and locally grown, you can use your grill 24/7, and you probably have more time on your hands to be adventurous with your cuisine!

Being a naturally healthy eater, I find eating in the summer so enjoyable. I much prefer a juicy tomato topped with mozzarella and basil to a heaping spoonful of frozen peas! Although I wish summer could last forever, seize the months you have and enjoy the local produce that is so readily available. You’ll be missing it in January!

As much as I love fresh fruits and vegetables, it is summer…and that means you need something to keep you cool. Ice cream, duh! I don’t know about you, but ice cream tastes much better when it’s dripping down your chin and you’re enjoying it with family and friends than when you’re eating it out of the container by the fire in your pajamas!

Some eat to live and others live to eat. I am most definitely the latter, and I have no doubt about that. I absolutely love being in the kitchen- cooking, baking, experimenting and having fun with the food that will nourish your body.

Enjoy these snapshots of some of my favorite meals so far this summer!

Royal Stork Has Landed

The day all Brits (and Americans) have been waiting for since April 29, 2011 has finally arrived! The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, otherwise known as Will and Kate, welcomed their first born into the world today.

If you’re anything like me (obsessed with the royal family) you we’re refreshing the BBC Twitter account and googling “Royal Baby Watch” every minute of every hour today! When I first saw the news via Twitter, I couldn’t believe Kate delivered a boy! I was hoping (along with William) that the couple would have a little girl. I know that the blue little bundle of joy will be loved immensely!

 Image

Because the media constantly compared Kate’s pregnancy to that of Kim Kardashian, I’m very happy that Kate delivered a boy. Hopefully, it will be harder to compare Kim’s baby girl to Kate’s baby boy, because we all know there’s truly no comparison between a true classy family and a shallow, media-obessed one. Although, I’m sure Kris Jenner is already concocting a plan to have them married one day (as if)!

Because Prince Charles’ name was not released for a month after his birth and Prince William’s name for a week after, I’m restlessly awaiting the release the new little prince’s name! Several speculations have been made about the possible name for the precious baby boy. I certainly know that the name will be full of class and very traditional, but here are my “Top 10 Royal Baby Name Predictions:”

1) George

2) James

3) Alexander

4) Henry

5) Richard

6) Charles

7) Edward

8) David

9) Albert

10) Stephen

Regardless of what The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge decide to name their son, I know that he will grow up with amazing, loving, and nurturing parents. I’m certainly looking forward to watching him grow up! Congrats to the happy couple and their new bundle of joy!

Monogram Alert: My Bedding

For my 15th birthday, my mother and I decided that it was time for me to ditch my Lilly Pulitzer bedding, bunk beds and lime green walls. In order to make my room more sophisticated, it entailed a complete re-do! After much consideration and decision-making, we settled on the ever-so refined combination of black and white. Because I’m still adore color, I knew that a simply black and white design would not cut it!

Being the prep that I naturally am, the only solution to adding color into my lifeless room was through monograms and a lot of pink! It’s simply amazing what an accent color can do to a room.

As you can see, I have added several splashes of pink and a monogram on my bedding as well as my pillows!
