Creating with Crayola

Searching for inspiration for my next project, I stumbled upon Bloomingdale’s display of garments made from Crayola crayons. Designers ranging from Nanette Lepore to Rebecca Minkoff used these childhood coloring tool to create beautiful, monochromatic looks. After realizing the amount of crayons I would need for a full-blown crayon garment, I decided to use them only the bodice. Sifting through the studio and old crafts, I was able to find plenty of blue crayons, in a series of shades.

After sewing a simple, strapless bodice and a full skirt from navy blue satin, I began to attach a myriad of blue crayons onto the gown. With only a few hot glue burns, I created the crayon dress, more formally know as “Color Me Blue.”

On an exciting note, I was pleased to find out that this gown received recognition in my school’s art show. First place in the 3-D portion, the crayon dress has proven to be a favorite of many. Who knows what my next project in the studio will be!!

A Visit to the City That Never Sleeps

If you follow me on Instagram (@fashionista_mkd), you would be well aware that my mother and I spent a few days in NYC last week. On a whim, we hopped aboard an early train from DC to NYC and spent our days in the city shopping, trying new restaurants, seeing a broadway show…and more shopping! Take a closer look at our trip below.

Nu New York– a small yet fabulous boutique in SoHo (on the border of Little Italy). With modest prices and unique clothing, I would highly recommend. I even purchased a few items from here!

Back & Better Than Ever: Zoolander

As any avid fashion follower would know, some very special news debuted at Paris Fashion Week’s Valentino show. Derek Zoolander and Hansel McDonald will be making a reappearance in the film industry. Slated to arrive in 2016, the Zoolander sequel will follow Derek and Hansel, back on the modeling scene and under threat from an opposing company. Quite the honor, Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson walked in Valentino’s Fall 2015 show in order to shoot footage for the film. And it seems as though even Anna Wintour approves. Take a look!

MKDesigns Goes To The Islands

With my love of fashion and knowledge of sewing, my friends often ask for my help in all their styling needs. This week, one of my fabulous friends- Kathryn- presented me with such a fashion task. A pair of her favorite pairs of palazzo pants, embellished with black and white elephants, had ripped. Instead of simply patching the hole, Kathryn and I decided that giving the pants a fresh new look was the better option.

With a few snips, a trip to the fabric store, and an hour at the sewing machine, I transformed the torn palazzo pants into a sassy beach coverup!  Now, Kathryn has the perfect beachwear as she relaxes in the Cayman Islands for spring break. I am proud to say that one of MKDesigns pieces have traveled internationally. Please scroll down to check out Kathryn modeling the fun and sassy coverup!
